Dear Tiger: Driving a flat, open fairway

Tiger, approximately how far can you drive the ball if there is no wind, and you have a flat, open fairway?
— John from Lexington, Ky.

Like most PGA Tour players, John, I can hit the ball a long way if I have to. I made the decision not to hit it 100 percent to help with direction and control. On a reachable par 5, or a short par 4, I may step it up a bit, but even then, accuracy is important. It's why I recommend to amateurs that when they go to the range, don't hit it as hard as you can every time. Pick a spot, aim and try to get it close.

I just want to say thanks for introducing me to the world of golf. You have made me a huge golf fan! I also play and try to take tips from you whenever possible. Thanks again!
— Adam from Uniontown, Pa.

Thanks, Adam. One of the great things about golf is that you can play for a lifetime with family and friends. What's also neat is that you can play with folks of different abilities. It wouldn't be fair for me to play tennis against Fed or basketball against MJ, but I play with buddies with high handicaps, and we have a great time. Be sure to have fun, and if you work at it, you'll continue to get better.

Tiger, you're just simply the best. I can't believe that you have come back from such a rough injury and had a great year! All the best and keep winning!
— John from San Antonio, Calif.

I appreciate that, John. It was a lot of hard work, but it paid off. When I played at the Accenture Match Play, I had so many questions. Would my knee hold up in competition? Would I regain my explosiveness? Would there be swelling? I was unaccustomed to so much uncertainty. My recovery was like anything you want in life. You have to set a goal and not be scared to work for it.

What did the kids dress up as for Halloween? Did you guys had out candy?! Wow, I'd love to see what Tiger Woods hands out to kids! Haha.
— Morgan from Riverton, Utah

Hey, now, Morgan, I handed out candy. Our neighborhood has a lot of kids, and the doorbell was constantly ringing (and Taz and Yogi didn't stop barking). It was Charlie's first Halloween, and I think Sam understood it a little better this year. One thing she definitely knew was that people gave her candy, and Dad picked out what he liked first.

What is your favorite thing to do during the fall? We are from the Midwest, so raking leaves, outside fires and apple cider are our favorites!
— Joey from Chicago

It was in the mid-80s this week in Florida, so outside fires and apple cider sound great. After all the hot days down south, the best part of fall is being able to be outside. I'll run with Sam and Elin, and I will take long walks with the kids. I also enjoy college and pro football and the Fall Classic, even though the Dodgers aren't in it.
